Operation Blue Star was a military operation conducted by the Indian Army in June 1984 to flush out Sikh militants who had occupied the Golden Temple, the holiest shrine of Sikhism, in Amritsar, Punjab. The operation was ordered by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who faced a secessionist movement led by Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, a charismatic religious leader who advocated for a separate Sikh state of Khalistan. The operation resulted in heavy casualties on both sides, as well as widespread damage to the temple complex and its sacred scriptures. The operation also sparked a wave of violence and protests across India, and led to the assassination of Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards four months later.
